Summer Workout Tips

to help you beat the heat while you stay active!

If you’re like me, you like to be outside, and working out outside is even better! It can be a great break from looking at the same 4 walls all the time. But, it seems like the summer’s just keep getting hotter, and with a temperature nearing 100-degrees this week, with humidity, I wanted to share some tips for staying healthy when active outside during a time we all want to just stay in the A/C.

  1. Stay Hydrated - Most importantly, you need to drink plenty of fluids during the summer. If you work-out, you need to drink even more. Need ideas to help increase your fluid intake? Let me know!

  2. Start Early - Take advantage of Daylight Savings & the sun coming up early. Get your workout in before the sun reaches it’s highest & strongest point to avoid extreme heat.

  3. Water Activities - Think swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and even water sports like water skiing when boating. The water helps keep you cooler and you still get a great workout!

  4. Sunscreen - Block those rays and protect your skin by applying sunscreen before stepping outside.

  5. Breathable Clothing - Make sure your clothing choices are lightweight & breathable. Think shorts and a tank top, not leggings. Lighter colors are a bonus as well!

  6. Find Shade - Stay out of the direct sunlight if at all possible. The shaded areas always feel cooler and it helps prevent sunburn too!

  7. Low Intensity - Keep the activity at a lower intensity than you would if you were in air conditioning. If you’re outside in 100-degree heat and sun, it may not be the time to try a new high intensity interval workout.

  8. Take Breaks - Listen to your body. If it starts to feel weak, you have a headache or nausea, stop and find a cooler place to rest and get some water.

  9. Bring a Friend - Working out is always more fun with someone else anyways, and having a friend with you gives you someone who can help if you start to feel unwell.

Don’t let the summer heat keep you from reaching your goals! Just make sure you listen to your body and don’t overdo it in the extreme heat.
